What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome is a condition that stems from the frequent use of computers and other electronic devices.

What Are the Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome?

Common symptoms of computer vision syndrome include eyestrain, red and irritated eyes, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, dry eyes, and general eye discomfort. An exam from our eye doctor at our office can determine if computer vision syndrome is causing your symptoms.

Why Does Computer Vision Syndrome Cause Dry Eyes?

Most people that use electronics blink far too infrequently. Your eyes need the proper lubrication that comes from frequent blinking. Less blinking exposes your eyes to the air and dries them out.

What Else Causes Computer Vision Syndrome?

Some other factors could influence computer vision syndrome. For example, if your computer screen is not at the correct angle, it could cause strain. Also, your room may not be adequately lit, causing more stress on the eyes. Make sure to adjust the brightness levels in the room and eye positions to prevent computer vision syndrome.

How Is Computer Vision Syndrome Diagnosed?

Computer vision syndrome is relatively easy to diagnose at our office. We will use a variety of tests, including visual acuity, refractive testing, and other eye functioning tests, to evaluate your eyes. We will ask you about your symptoms to determine if it is a case of computer vision syndrome. You'll notice a significant improvement once you start our recommended treatment plan.

What Else Can I Do to Help?

Self-care is very effective for managing computer vision syndrome. Our team can instruct you on positioning your computer for less strain. Also, frequent breaks from the computer to blink will provide a lot of relief. We may also recommend over-the-counter or prescription eye drops to help lubricate the eyes. Proper application of our recommended treatments will help your eyes get back to normal.
