Astigmatism

One of the most common vision problems is astigmatism. The condition is caused by an error in the shape of the cornea. You may notice various symptoms such as fuzziness or blurry vision. If you think you may be suffering from astigmatism, you should schedule an eye exam at your earliest convenience. If you are looking for an eye doctor in Jonesboro, AR, the optometry professionals at Fletcher Family Eyecare are ready to assist you.

Causes & Symptoms

Genetics play a large role in causing astigmatism, even though the exact cause of astigmatism is unknown. Most of the time, the condition is present at birth. However, people can still develop it later on in their lives. Eye injuries may also result in astigmatism, and it is also sometimes developed following eye surgery. If you suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness, you are more likely to develop it.

Symptoms of astigmatism include:

  • Squinting
  • Eyestrain
  • Hard time seeing at night
  • Fuzzy, distorted, or blurry vision both far away and up close
  • Irritation of the eye
  • Headaches

Diagnosing Astigmatism

Our optometrist will diagnose astigmatism via an eye exam. Tests that are used to diagnose astigmatism include:

  • Refraction test: This test involves the use of a machine known as an optical refractor. You will be asked to read a chart during the test by looking through different strengths of lenses on the optical refractor.
  • Visual acuity assessment test: You will be asked to read letters on a chart to test your vision at a distance.
  • Keratometry: Our doctor will measure the curvature of your cornea by looking through a keratometer.

Treating Astigmatism

If you are just suffering from mild astigmatism, treatment may not be necessary. If your astigmatism is on the severe side, treatment may involve the following methods:

  • Corrective lenses: Contact lenses or corrective eyeglasses will be prescribed by our eye doctor to meet your needs. This is the most common treatment for astigmatism and is also the least invasive.
  • Ortho-k: This treatment involves the use of rigid contact lenses that will temporarily correct the cornea’s irregular curvature. These contact lenses are to be worn overnight and removed during the day. Ortho-k allows patients to see without glasses or contacts.
  • Surgery: Refractive surgery may be recommended if you are suffering from a severe case of astigmatism. Surgery will correct your vision permanently. You should discuss the benefits and risks before having surgery with your doctor.
